Students with print disabilities present a difficult challenge educational institutions that are trying to service them. These students can be blind have dyslexia or a score of other issues that often prevent them from the full benefit of higher education. Colleges and Universities often struggle to meet these students needs. Among the factors that contribute to this problem are the cost of converting traditional textbooks to formats that these students can use. Flat World, an open content publisher and Bookworld an online library have partnered in attempt to bridge this gap. Even though this budding partnership is geared toward students with special needs, the larger overall student population can also benefit from having open-content textbooks published online. In addition to being a “Green” solution partnerships like this can also bridge the gap between academic haves and have-nots by driving down the cost of acquiring and distributing textbooks and making their content more readily accessible.
